Please introduce yourself.
Hi, I’m Juan Pablo Suarez Woolcott,, a member of the class of 2024. I currently attend AZ Barrett as a freshman majoring in civil engineering with a sustainability track.
Did your BCF Intern experience contribute to achieving your goals?
The Brophy Community Foundation (BCF) taught me various skills that have been invaluable. During my summer there, I worked extensively with Excel, which I continue to use in my classes. Employers often look for this proficiency, and it has helped me stand out at career fairs.
When discussing my experience, I’ll mention my work with BCF, even though it isn’t directly related to engineering. Companies appreciate seeing leadership roles and activities outside of engineering, as they want to know if candidates can solve problems. This experience has definitely benefited me. When potential employers ask about BCF, it also gives me a chance to promote the foundation. Overall, this internship has been a great asset for my personal and professional growth.
How did your experience at Brophy College Prep influence your career or academic path after graduation?
Brophy prepared me really well. First, during the first month as a freshman, I managed to get everything done, and it was honestly quite easy. I wasn’t sure what else to do, so I focused on my academics and then immediately turned my attention to clubs and organizations.
I joined HPSA, which, although it’s business-oriented, also has great contacts with companies, allowing us to network. I also became a member of SHPE, which stands for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. There’s a committee where you can engage with companies, and I actually met representatives from an aerospace company at one of our general meetings.
It’s important to participate in not just academics but also extracurriculars. Networking plays a key role when trying to make new friends. ASU is quite big; even though I’m in Barrett, there are a lot of students around. For instance, my construction class has about 400 students, and then I have to transition to my human event class, which only has 20 students.
This variety helps me develop my character, not only through academics but also through extracurriculars and social interactions. Engaging in these areas also benefits my career development and job prospects.
How would the journey have been different without attending Brophy and without BCF’s support?
I believe I wouldn’t be at Barrett, or it would have been much harder to be there if I had gone to Brophy. I wouldn’t say I was underdeveloped as a person, but Brophy has helped me in many areas—not just in academics, but also socially and through networking. I feel that in another environment, I would have had to work much harder.
I truly appreciate the support I’ve received; it’s been amazing. I was just talking to my parents about how, if I hadn’t gone to Brophy, I don’t know where I would be right now. I’m very grateful for the assistance from the Brophy Community Foundation.
